Periodontal disease is an infection that affects the tissues and bone that support the teeth. Healthy gum tissue fits like a cuff around each tooth. When someone has periodontal disease, the gum tissue pulls away from the tooth. As the disease worsens, the tissue and bone that support the teeth are destroyed. Over time, teeth may fall out or need to be removed. Treating periodontal disease in the early stages can help prevent tooth loss. Tooth loss is not the only possible problem posed by periodontal disease. The health of your mouth is linked to the health of your whole body. There is a proven link between periodontal disease, heart disease and strokes. You can have periodontal disease without clear symptoms. That is why regular dental checkups and periodontal examinations at your local dental office are very important. Here is a video of Whoopi Goldberg on “The View” talking about Periodontal Disease and the role it has played in her life.
